A Tribute to Our Visitors: Modern Saints of the Trinity Dome

One of the ten largest churches in the world, the National Shrine has received many distinguished guests throughout its almost century-long history. Among these visitors were two of our era’s most vibrant saints: Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa. During their lifetimes, both figureheads of modern Catholicism developed a close affiliation with the Shrine through many visits and acknowledgements. Thus, it is no surprise that they were selected to grace the Trinity Dome mosaic.

Msgr. Rossi on EWTN: Behind-the-Scenes at the Trinity Dome

Last week, on May 3, 2017, Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, appeared on EWTN Live as Father Mitch Pacwa’s special guest. Throughout the live broadcast, Monsignor Rossi discussed the fascinating history of the National Shrine and the monumental effort underway to complete America’s Catholic Church with the mosaic ornamentation of what will be its “crowning jewel” — the Trinity Dome. He spoke of the behind-the scenes process of crafting and installing the mosaic as well as the significance of the figures represented in the dome’s artwork. (more…)

Their Stories: The Trinity Dome’s North American Missionaries

The Trinity Dome mosaic encompasses a procession of saints of multiple nationalities and cultures. However, each and every saint depicted shares a deep connection with the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and with the pioneering of American Catholicism. In our last post, we highlighted two of North America’s pragmatic indigenous saints: St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St. Juan Diego. This week, we are excited to reveal two of North America’s most iconic missionaries, to be memorialized on the Trinity Dome: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini and St. Junípero Serra.

Which North American Saints Grace the Trinity Dome Mosaic?

With the completion of the Trinity Dome mosaic, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will be finished according to the original design. The mosaic will depict the Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, the Nicene Creed, and the four Evangelists. One of the most striking elements of the dome is the diverse depiction of saints who have a special association with the United States and the National Shrine. Among the saints are two of North America’s most iconic indigenous saints: St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St. Juan Diego.
